Nearly 800 State Troopers in Oklahoma patrol over 111,000 miles of highways and roads in the state. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a number of specialized divisions, including two tactical teams and a bomb squad. Here are the steps you need to go through to get hired and trained as a State Trooper in Oklahoma.

Step 1. Meet the Basic Qualifications for Oklahoma Trooper Candidacy
To be considered for jobs as an Oklahoma State Trooper jobs, you must meet certain requirements:
- You must be a U.S. citizen.
- You must be at least 23 years old.
- You cannot be older than 45 years old at the start of the Academy.
- You must have either an associate degree or at least 62 hours of college credit.
- This must be from a college or university that has been accredited.
- You must not have the following DUI, DWI, or DUID interactions on your record:
- 2 or more convictions
- 1 conviction within the past 10 years
- 1 charge within the past 5 years
- Your driving record must not show
- Suspension or Revocation of your license within the past 36 months.
- More then five traffic violations on more than three separate occasions within the past 36 months.
- You must not have a domestic violence conviction.
- Your vision must be excellent (no worse than 20/70 uncorrected and correctable to 20/20)
Step 2. Submit Your Application
You must first apply online to start the process of becoming an Oklahoma State Trooper. You can only do this during open application periods. To check if applications are being accepted, you can call 1-866-659-9021.
You must provide the following documents in person on your first testing date:
- Birth Certificate
- College Transcripts
- DD-214 (if applicable)
- Bibliographic Questionnaire
It takes about six months for your application to be processed after the deadline has passed for the next academy.
Step 3. Pass Physical Agility Test, Written Exams and Oral Interview
While your application is being processed, you will be contacted by Human Resources to arrange a data for the next phase of your application process. This involves a pass/fail physical agility test. You must be able to
- Perform 32 sit-ups in one minute
- Run 300 meters in 65 seconds
- Perform 23 push-ups in one minute
- Run 1.5 miles in 14:15
The Oklahoma State Highway Patrol provides guidelines to prepare for the physical exam.
You will also need to achieve a score of 70% on a written test that measures problem solving, mathematical ability, reading comprehension, spelling, and writing. It also includes a component of personality assessment. You can buy a study guide here.
In addition, you will be interviewed by a board of three members of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to determine if you are a suitable applicant.
Step 4. Background Check
If the round of testing identified you as one of the top candidates, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol will conduct an extensive background check on you.
Step 5. Executive Interview
If you passed the background check, you will be contacted to schedule an Executive Interview with Chief of Patrol and the Police Commissioner.
Step 6. Polygraph, Physical, Vision, and Psychological Testing
If the results of your interview were successful, you will be offered a position to train in the Academy and must undergo the following tests:
- Polygraph examination
- Psychological Written Tests:
- MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Test) and/or California Psychological Test
- Vision Test
- You cannot have vision worse than 20/70 uncorrected.
- You must be able to correct this to 20/20.
- Vision Test
- Psychological Interview
- This will be conducted by a psychologist under contract to the Department of Public Safety
- Psychological Interview
- Physical Examination, including Drug Screening
Step 7. Attend Trooper Academy for Training
If all of your testing showed you to be a suitable candidate to join the Oklahoma State Highway Patrol, you will undergo training at The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Academy located at:
The Robert R. Lester Training Center
3600 N. Martin Luther King Blvd.
It is strongly recommended that you be in top physical shape before you enter the Academy for the 20 week long program in becoming a State Trooper in Oklahoma. You will be living under boot camp conditions in a dormitory. The Academy adheres to strict discipline at all times.
